Respawn LAN Forums _ General Stuff _ v4 - pros and cons

Posted by: BumbleBJ Jan 16 2007, 12:23 PM

Hi guys,

Just looking for some feedback on v4, so we know what to work on for future events.

Was there anything that people were particularly fond of, or particularly upset by?

I think NGU could do with some more space at V5! they were quite the attraction at V4 and would be great to have more room and more to offer from them!

and also, perhaps more Buy in Comps!
like flatout2 buy in

Buy in comps are always fun!

i thought everyone was hanging shit on other lans for having buyin comps..
the argument i heard was that people dont want to pay more money on top of the entrance fee to play in a comp.

All up it was a great Lan for v4

But you could of made the CSS Competition more organised instead of us controlling it.

And the Dota comp if possible not on the same time as the CSS competition besides that, It was a good lan overall.

Is there Photos ohmy.gif

not buy in for the major comps... just like $2 buy in comps like NGU do for some of their comps!

Sunday morning was dead.... jees GI Joe is ammusing, but when nobody wakes up to the sound of an air horn, well thats depressing. Shadow shouldn't have to carry the team.

Also, no "apple juice" for Zardoz......

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

We didn't run any buy-in comps for our major games. Not averted to helping out if gamers want to set up and run their own buy-ins though. I thought NGU's $2 buy in for Wii tennis was great fun. I played, and had a great time. Money well spent! Organisation of the comp itself was also fantastic.

As for the Sunday morning.. heh, i'm at uni summer school ATM, so bailed out around 3am, and was back early, around 9am. I suppose we could get onto organising games through the entire night/morning. It's hard to have admins set up all day Friday and Friday night, run the even from 8am Saturday morning, and still be bright and chirpy at 8am Sunday morning. The Shadow does a top job holding the fort for those few hours in between.

This is an alcohol free event - no one was drinking, especially not admins!

Any further comments/suggestions/constructive criticism?

Another good LAN run. It really sucks I will be moving to Canberra very soon and so have very little chance of attending another. I searched the web and it seems the major Canberra LAN group has broke up so no more fun for me. Outside of Warcraft 3 custom maps and Flatout 2 there didn't seem to be many other games being played unless you count CS:S or the loud mouth guys playing COD2. It wouldn't hurt to have a list of maybe 3 games that people should have prepared with patch listing that might be less played but still quite fun. Does anyone hear UT2K4 32 player CTF matches?

I don't think there was enough air horn either or bad singing over the PA. Having CS:S and DOTA running at the same time might suck but not as much as missing out on getting a team into DOTA by a small margin of time. It would be cool to have comps organised that have no prizes associated with it other than bragging rights over the losers. Cut the hall in half and have one side competing against the other in a big multiplayer game would be pretty fun.

Yeah, sorry for piking early before packing up, needed lunch by the time i left and was buggered from picking Mang up twice and dropping him off. He adds like 40kms to the trip. Next time perhaps.

Also, some sort of control over file sharing, 2 slots on DC++ isn't enough and just makes people force there way in via Shakespear...

More practical themes would be better, disco gear isn't very comfy in the heat or cold and especially not at a LAN.

Admin fort should also be made out of something else to free up crash mats for people to sleep on.

10Gb switches were awesome, was interesting that my HDD couldn't keep up and timed me out.

BTW, WTS my brand new DFI LAN party UT nF4 Ultra-D that I won from Mariokart, Im a laptop user.

admin fort is made of mats so that admins actually get mats to sleep on!

Posted by: Pilfir Jan 20 2007, 02:33 PM

Admins were using the mats as walls against the tables, nobody was sleeping on them... Besides, in the fort, they were sleeping on the floor and chairs.

Digg3r {

I thought the lan ran well.

A little disapointing about the dota and c:ss comp clashing.
I really liked the lan intranet, why not open it up before the event so people can organise their teams and the admins can get a better feel for what people are going to play etc. People could confirm their team on the day.

This is only my personal feedback, im sure people disagree so please take this with a pinch of salt.

Pros:
Chicken Wings on BBQ is cool as!
Kats enthusiasm on the Saturday and Shadows enthusiasm on the Sunday.
Network stability (at least for where I was)
Wii was a good contribution
Good turn out (especially for the time of year)
No one yelled Penis, not once!
Maccas discount is win
$25 for me at least is a good price for the LAN, I doubt I would pay more and would feel guilty paying less.
I love the venue, always have.
Chocolate Cupcakes!

Cons:
No MSN access and to a lesser extent no Internet access.
Mario Cart for N64 = fail, Cube or the SNES version = win, comp should of been earlier, but mainly cause the people I knew who would play it had already gone home.
Pings wasn't open the next day nor was their a bbq for breakfast. I would prefer a bbq at breakfast time, but I could understand why others would prefer a brunch sort of time. Thats just my preference.
DC incompatability is crappola. Most of the people with the most stuff were using an older version I couldnt access. Luckily their is enough redundancy of data though.

Think thats about it. =D

Just cause I won the Mario Kart 64 comp......

The N64 rules.

Opening up the intranet is something i'd like to do, but its also hooking into our cashbox system, so we'd have to get prepaid entry happening.
There is also the problem of its almost constant development outside of the event times.

With the internet we find alot of people like to browse youtube and other high bandwidth sites so we are unable to open net access unless we find a way to cap speeds at maybe 5kbps per person (without slowing steam updates), again im working on ways to open up MSN without leaving holes for mass bandwidth usage smile.gif

for the DC imcompatability issues, next lan i hope to have some more documentation on the EMS about everything, as well as the binary for the older version of DC++, it doesn't require hashing (the main reason people prefer it), and it seems to run alot faster because of the lack of TTH calculations.

As for all the good points that have been made... im hoping they'll stay good after next lan, as far as everything goes, we do our best and are only really getting better smile.gif

I may be able to help with that, got a little machine I should demo for you sometime. It has various bandwidth monitoring and capping facilities, and is quite easy to set up and use. If you're interested in having a look let me know some time
