Dude, v20 LAN appeared to be kinder unorganised. The competitions I did not hear or where not presented as well as they should. People were also getting up all over the place receiving prizes? Still had a fantastic time.

QUOTE (SirSquidness @ Apr 18 2011, 04:45 PM) *
Music is something we will never win at. Not because we suck at choosing music, but because there are 400 different people with 400 different tastes in music. We have tried a variety of different styles at Respawn; the only constant is that people always complain that the music was horrible. The difference this LAN was that there were a few (not many, just a few) people who said they liked the music.

With this in mind, we tend to keep the music at a quiet background noise level - was it too loud? The PA volume is forever getting changed for announcements and such, so regulating the music level is occasionally forgotten.

We also picked the music this LAN because it is generic. It wasn't a niche genre (dubstep, classical, etc). It lacked, for the most part, vocals, which makes it less distracting. It was part of a large compilation of background music, put together for this sort of environment.

That being said, you're welcome to suggest alternative approaches to the problem (this goes for any issues ), just keep in mind that just because you like the music does not guarantee everyone will like it.

tl;dr: 400 people, 400 music tastes, we can't please everyone.

Hmm perhaps something on the intranet which allows people to upload a song and add it to a queue??

I like the idea =D! Two main prob though I can think of, one being legitimacy of files being uploaded, and secondly, what if someone uploads a track of just orgasm sounds =S..? would need a way to check every song being uploaded..

Just in case, to evade any copyright infringement (lol again like anyone cares anyhow, but for even organizers you gotta be careful how you go about it), it could still work if they provided a huge list of songs that were available from a wide range of styles - without any information to suggest whether the source is legitimate, but we'll assume it is - whereby people will be able to vote for songs on the EMS (intranet/electronic management system)..

I think that if such a music system was implemented and logged through the EMS, I'm sure the Respawn Admin team could take a hard line on a practical joke like that...

Whilst the idea of ejecting someone from the venue isn't something I'd like to see, something with a strong caution that abuse to the system could result in removal from the venue - then such a system could work. It'd be good to be able to "vote" for a song change.

I built an application that did accept music via multicast, had voting, remote control etc... a few years back for a small LAN group.

- Lack of hotdogs? I was told they didnt have any left >:( so I settled with a Steak & Cheese Pie (<3)

- The first sausage sizzle.... I like the concept, but I spoke to probably 5 different people, who all confirmed my suspicions that they weren't cooked properly. Everybody I asked (with the exception of the 6th one) said they had gotten a stomach ache, and that they HAD eatten a sausage. The 6th person HADN'T eatten a sausage and didnt get a stomach ache.

-Hotdogs: Sadly our hotdog machine became incontienent and wet its pants all over its power board. So for safety and to protect the players, it was decided to abandon the hotdogs. We apologise for that and I have an action item to resolve this for the next event given the huge popularity for the hot dawgs.

-BBQ: Can you tell me if it was the midnight or morning BBQ? This concerns me greatly and I'd really like to know more so I can go back to the core admin team with information and an action plan to resolve this one.

A lot of awesome stuff being shared and hilarious when some guy rage quitted 'the file sharing program' after being called out for sharing CP.

Thought someone was just talking shit in chat. That's disgusting. Why was this not reported to the police and said person ejected? AFP would love to know about it.

We do not support DC++, we do not run DC++. That said if you felt something needed to be addressed, come to the front and speak to a member of the admin team. If the action warranted escalation to the police, then it would be dealt with swiftly and without delay. We can't do anything if you don't come and tell us.

Not many people played CS GG sad.gif

Wasn't the GG mod like screwed? I played it once or twice (and then my mate played it for a few hours total on my pc as me), but realised that there weren't knives, the GG was won if someone got a nade kill, and it didn't immediately swap maps after the game was won :s ?

Not to mention, me and my mate were laughing so much at lee and queeny raging. We were like a row away so we heard it alot..... Was surprised how long it went on for tho.

Ahh ok, thats a pity about the hotdogs, was really craving one at around 2am tongue.gif

Yeah, it was the first one, the midnight one. I ended up not wanting to risk the morning BBQ, so I didn't bother with it. Perhaps the snags were left out too long or something? I dno, I'm no food expert, I just eat the stuff. xD

3xtreme LAN had quite a sophisticated EMS that let you upload music into a queue and it would play over the P.A. The only bad/good thing was that it allowed people to skip the songs after 10 votes... as you could imagine the length of a song that played usually didnt last past 30 seconds.....

I'm sure the admins could look into it, iirc forever ago initialy 3xtreme Lan and Respawn Lan shared the same codebase for their EMS, so the feature might still be lurkiing about..

See, I could have left the knife level in for you, buuuuuut then you'd end up on a server with a bunch of people running around holding nothing biggrin.gif

(Knives weren't being equipped in game; removing the knife level was the only solution seen.)

I am Lee! lol. But yes, GG mod was screwed, regardless of no knife level, you still had the game. Just get a nade to win. Nade is as much as a bitch as knife though, so it doesn't really matter. One less terrible level you have to go through! Queenie was changing the maps manually anyway, so it was all good. Hopefully next time Valve won't be crap & ruin CS GG next time.

P.S. Still big love for you Squid biggrin.gif GG made my night haha.

On a seriously note however, the amount of space between the spacing of tables was BY FAR an improvement from last spawn. YOU COULD ACTUALLY WALK THROUGH WITHOUT HAVING TO ASK PEOPLE TO MOVE IN, FUCKING PROPS TO SANDO. It was so rockin'

This for sure.

Had to be the only respawn where getting in/out/around rows wasn't a pain in the freaking ass. Even with peeps bring their own chairs, it wasn't that much of a pain. Also not pushing the tables at the back all the way to the wall was genius. Meant people sitting at the back didn't have to walk all the way through the row to get in and out.

Lack of fungames was an obvious shame. Was looking forward to some hectic 30 player hl2dm and css gungame. Lets hope next respawn doesn't coincide with another steam update, you guys have been pretty unlucky with that.

Also lack of irongut and other afk comps? Or did I just miss them? Wasn't really paying attention to announcements.

Music was fine, didn't notice it. You do bring headphones for a reason.

Admins were great as usual.

Overall I was pretty happy with how this respawn went.
