HOW TO MAKE STEAM WORK

1. As you're arriving Saturday at 10am, try where possible to leave your PC connected to your broadband. Even before bed force steam to run an update by shutting it down and starting it up. This will ensure steam will poll for updates!

2. Once you are shut down, come to the LAN and setup your PC but this next bit is vital.....
Don't plug your network in straight away, let it boot and login to your windows machine

3. Start Steam and when you are presented with the following screen select "START IN OFFLINE MODE" and attempt to play games.

Why do we ask this?
We have a very limited connection provided by La Trobe university. We give you enough access to authenticate to steam where it's required but that is it. If you start leeching updates, you clog the tubes and nobody can auth or get into steam games. It causes rage and so on... Last event Sando and I went around to a number of PC's with a 3G laptop who complained they couldn't use some games to find out the majority of those people needed the TF2 update (which Sirsquid had hosted on ftp.respawn.lan for you to grab so you didn't clog the tubes)

PLEASE UPDATE ON THE NIGHT BEFORE RESPAWN LAN (or EVEN THE MORNING OF). It will make your experience 1000% better.

Just as a side note, I had trouble getting steam into offline mode after it failed to login. When it says you can't start in offline mode because your credentials aren't saved, I tried this and it worked.

1) Start steam, enter in your steam username and password and let it try to connect again.

2) Pull out the network cable now. Your credentials are on there, so when you try to start steam in offline mode it should work.

At least, it worked for me so it might help someone else.
