High pitched sound at seemingly random times Options

My computer has been making a high pitched sound at what seems to be random times. It's a long sound and can sometimes last for hours. It hasn't happened any time I have been in a position to take off the side of my care and try and hear what it is coming from though.

It would most likely be the power supply right?

Take your powersupply out

On the fan there should be 4 screws
Tighten them, put it back in, see if it still makes the noise

Does it happen in games etc, or even when your idling?

happens at random times (in games, and idle. even started in the middle of the night once) and my PSU is in fact shaw which is why I've been suspecting that to be the problem. it was supposed to be a temporary PSU until I find the time to go buy a better one.

Could be a cap in the PS on the way out

What are your system specs.

If your shaw "PSU" is being overloaded it could cause a squeel like you are describing.

WAAAAAAAAAAY overpowered for any shaw, even a 1500w.
The problem with shaw or any generic power supply is their advertised wattage is nowhere near their actual capacity.
I have read somewhere that someone tested a 1500w shaw psu with a PSU tester, and it crapped out at about 280w.

This would be the source of your issues, overworked power supplies tend to squeel.
I am amazed the machine is even functioning

I recommend forking out about $90-100 on your new Power supply.

Do yourself a favour and get a new power supply regardless of the issue. With any luck, that SHAW PSU will end up taking out the rest of your system when it dies soon. I'd get at least a 500w PSU for your system from a reputable brand like Corsair, Seasonic, Antec - there are many other good brands but these are just a few I generally use.

Yes, in fact, it does!

Firstly, it provides "cleaner" power to your components. It's debatable whether this actually helps anything, but if you're getting close to the maximum load of the PSU, having clean power certainly helps keep your PC stable.


If there's ever a power brownout/fluctuation in your house, a decent and not overloaded PSU will generally be fine for anywhere up to a second, depending on how severe the power disruptance. The capacitors and transformers store quite a bit of power. If it can't keep up, it'll switch off.
A shit PSU will pass on the savings to the components in your, so to speak. If it can't keep up, it'll keep going. And break things. The filtering isn't as good, and if the PSU breaks, it is a lot more likely to break more as well.

And better PSUs have a better efficiency, which means less heat and less power drawn from the wall to provide the same amount of power to the stuff inside the case.
