Hey everyone,

It's been a crazy time since I was here last, with so much stuff going on in my personal life.. It's not all sorted out yet, but I'm getting there..

I need some help.. I'm looking at downsizing my main rig, and transferring all of my file sharing tasks to a separate machine. I'm looking at possibly building a server (or buying an off the shelf option) and running that for file sharing and streaming to tv devices..

Now... Do I go out and custom build myself a system, or do I go find myself a cheap NAS and run that? I'm currently operating on a limited budget of about $600. Because it will be "always-on" I want a low power system.

Any suggestions?

Hey guys,

Am currently in the market for a new laptop. Main uses will be net, watching videos, the usual uni stuff (assignments, presentations, labs (VM's) etc).

My question to you all is this... PC or Mac? I know I'm going to get the usual Mac is better than PC, PC is better than Mac banter, which I welcome. However, I'd like to know why you think one is better than the other. Want to know pros and cons for both.

Am looking to buy within the next month, so any advice anyone can offer, I'll gladly take on board.

Thanks in advance..

I love playing Flatout!

When the servers don't break that is.

Honestly I think you should build something better than that, if you're planning to just game, only get around 6GB because you won't really need 8GB+ unless you are hosting servers

Will be running virtual machines etc, hence why running 16gb DDR3, and 4 x 2tb drives.

What kinds of VM's u gonna run? MS server 08/11, ESXi to manage them? or just general VM's of workstations' EG: Mac, windows, linux?

Not sure yet. Definitely a few 08 servers, a couple win 7 installs, the rest I don't know yet. Only using 1 of the 2tb drives for vm's, the rest for storage and games.

Wow... CPU failure... that is pretty damn rare!

Yea, well there was other issues too, but they were human error haha. And now that all data is copied across, I can start sorting shit out.

Have you tried:
1- Testing the RAM in a different motherboard?
2- Trying just a single stick of RAM?

yup. new ram runs in my current build, and current ram (also ddr3) isn't detected in new build.

turns out there was a cpu issue. All sorted now. I hope.

Now I'm really pissed. I get all my parts home and start setting things up. Usually I test things before I put them into my case, but because I had a new case this time, I jumped ahead and put everything in before testing.

The good thing about the Maximus IV Extreme Z is it gives you debug codes on the board. The bad thing in my case is it's telling me that it's not detecting memory. I tried older RAM modules from my current build, with the same result.

2 days old, and already the board is RMA. Well it will be once I finally get a hold of someone in tech support at centrecom tomorrow.

Starting buying for upgrade yesterday. 2 x 64gb ssd and 4 x 2tb. Getting the rest next week. still trying to decide what case to get. I like the Armor+ cases, but they are too big for the space I currently have.

I was looking at the Tt Chaser Mk 1, but am happy to take on suggestions. I'm looking for a minimum of 5 visible bays, at least 5 hidden, with support for ssd mounting, and room to fit a gtx 570.

Not all reserved seats are being held by prepaid players.

Hmmm, I thought that was the whole point behind prepaying and reserving seats. That only those who prepaid could reserve seats.

I have made exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

That's fair enough.

I'm confused... There were 250 prepay slots, whom cam book seats. Yet when I look at the floor plan, there is less than 100 seats that havn't been reserved, excluding gopher and admin tables. Either I counted wrong, or there are less than 450 seats shown on the floor plan, or more than 250 seats have been reserved.

Just out of curiousity, was every seat filled at v20, or was there some empty spaces (not including prepaid seats). I was all set to attend, but a death in the family put a dampener on that.

Just wondering what needs to happen to entice more people to come along.

Good evening everyone,

Just curious as to the opinions of others regarding 5 in 3 drive bay converters. I am looking for something that won't keep me awake at night with the fan screaming like in a blade server.

Hot swap would be nice, but not a requirement.

Any ideas? I know Goose told me to look at ebay, but after more suggestions while I save cash.

Good afternoon everyone,

Just wanting to know if it is possible to create a single app to operate on both platforms, and if it is possible, what software would you recommend?

I am curious, as it may relate to the major project I am participating in this year as part of my Bachelor degree..

Was browsing through EB website to find stuff for myself for christmas, when I can across this...

http://www.ebgames.com.au/pc-152561-Parrot-AR-Drone-PC

With it controlled by iPhone/iPad, I immediately thought Zardoz might like this.

If I had the free cash, I'd buy one myself. Release date is next Jan, but that's not all that far away.
