OK, so i've been to Respawn v1, v2, v3, and now v10. I have been to lans for many years and i can honestly say i've only been to one (>100 player) lan that sucked more then respawn v10 did for me.

Games:
-Played CS Source, TF2, Flatout, and Trackmania which all seemed to have a decent amount of people playing at any one time.

Network/Power/EMS:
-Power was up throughout the time i was there, network seemed fast (although 3-4 of the ports on the switch at my table didn't work, until zardoz did something to the switch iirc?)

Comps:
-I entered the Flatout and Trackmania comps. The flatout comp was run very well imo.

-Trackmania was a shambles - no one even finished the track after a whole hour because the person who ran the comp (lord phobos) seemed more interested in 'showing off' his self made track then running a decent competition. Immediately as the server went up, literally everyone in the server expressed how much of a retarded choice the track was for a comp. Sort of like running a Counter-Strike competition on fy_iceworld. Well done, thanks for wasting an hour of our time.

Other:
-Some of the admins weren't approachable at all and didn't want anything to do with you when you had a problem/query.

-The person sitting in the admin area to Miniwalks' left went off at me for 'interrupting Miniwalks game' when i asked Miniwalks where i could find Deadman. I'm sorry but saying 'over there' and pointing is hardly an interruption. I have no idea if this guy is actually an admin or a 'friend of the admins' who thinks hes a fucking champ because he gets to sit in the admin area, but he was sitting in the admin area infront of a computer, that's good enough for me.

For the record, what this person said was "piss off can't you see he's playing a game" or something a long those lines. I am shocked that an admin would say such a thing to a player.
I pay $25 and drive 40 minutes to go to a lan and be helped by the LAN staff, not to be told to fuck off because you're too busy enjoying yourself.

-Tables were packed in too tightly, only made worse by idiot players who thought they could block a whole aisle for 4 hours while they had a chat.

Overall, i think respawn falls down in many aspects, and some of the staff have a lot to learn about 'customer service' from higher quality lans like 3xtremeLAN. They need to learn that they are running a lan, not a show-off power-tripping popularity competition. Yes admins, this means taht you may have to do hard work, play less games and help people out, omg no wai!

Personally i don't think i can be bothered to go to another Respawn ever again. It's too far away for me, the service sucks, the venue isn't anything special and for 150TB+ on the DC hub, there wasn't much quality content to be had, mostly junk. Also don't even get me started on how allowing NON-HASHED clients is ridiculous in this day and age.

edit:
To quote someone who may or may not have been involved with respawn lan in the past:
QUOTE
yeah.. it weirds me out that admins think they are allowed to play games... thats how shafted got shafted

theyve been to a lan.. helped run a lan but have no concept of business, customers, customer service etc... all the important stuff.. they are just really lucky that half the gamers dont care

I have to agree with some points that you have mentioned. I still will be coming to another respawn LAN. Had no problems with the network / speed. I found the admins to be helpfull except for the person organising the CoD4 tournament. For one it started very late. I am someone who is always on time so i expect that in others. Being late is a sign that you don't care. We had finished our second game by approx 10:30pm - 11:00pm. (the tournament was scheduled for 4:00pm. 6hrs for two games.... I did not eat dinner because i didn't want to delay the tournament and ruin everyone else's experience.

The other clans didnt seem to give a shit with no shows twice, which caused delays. The admin was too busy eating his sausages to give a shit about hassling the clans to get their shit together which is what an tournament organiser should be doing IMO. All this while i purposely held off eating for the sake of the tournament. Well i eventually did eat and did play my games but i will not bother entering another tournament if it is going to be like that, if the admins don't care why should we care?

Now you may not care if i don't enter another tournament, but as the above has mentioned its all about the customer service! See you next time and hopefully you can take what you have been told and turn it into something spectacular next event wink.gif

Not really being involved in many games (/shame) i cant comment much. I was going to play a FO2 comp, but it ran around 1 or something? i dunno, i went to bed though. Anyway, i dont see why your bitching about the admins, they deserve the right to play a few games here and there too... There are always gophers etc you can ask as well. Also, ask that sorta stuff on the DC hub - Dead man was left of centre stage on the admin desk, FYI.

In my experience, 3xtreme has never been run as well as respawn. With the exception of the last one, my experiences were : comps late, pizzas late, shit toilets (why would you run a 350 player event the same week they are refurbing the toilets and make us use 2 disabled toilets ya nubs), and shit power and network.
I think the admins, gophers, and all that helped out with respawn V10 deserve a huge round of applause. The event, from my view, ran extremely well. Whilst I am guilty of not gaming, there was plenty of gaming to be had.
Power was good (cept the nub with the kettle, onya miniwalks for publicly shaming the dick), and network was, as usual, Excellent. I wont comment on leech speeds, as the network isnt setup for that primarily, though speeds were rather awesome at some stages, I noticed there were minor hiccups and no games were interupted (except early with table of win fibre - gg to the guy who got down under my legs to place fibre without asking me to move...).

My only suggestion, would be use the projector more for announcement, and not silly pics. I missed the FO2 comp mainly cos i had headphones on and didnt hear announcements - though thats my own fault, as i didnt activly seek info... Since i spent most of the lan on DC, perhaps admins could investigate a DC bot for spamming comp times, and important announcements.

As for DC++ 306 etc... meh - most people know to hash their shit, but those who dont, 306 is fine. Its their own fault, when they find they cant leech from the high sharers, who all used 674 or higher, except a few. Anyway... not hard to run 2 clients if needed. I personally use 674 as its known to work with ALL clients, and i havent had any issues. Anyway, i dont think there is a need to govern the versions used... 306 provides a quick easy start for those who have never used it, and want to get it running quick.

Another minor thing to note as well, whilst i had a colorful argument with admins about banned equipment (UPS), I did not bring one, and completely agree with what the admins said about the banned equipment, but was disapointed to see at least one player with one. Also to the noob with the kettle, GTFO.

Anyway, Well done Respawn crew. You held yet another awesome event - with awesome decoration! Felt like i was in Quarantine!!! See you at V11.

seriously man how old are you ? like 14 grow up

do u think admin are their just to look after you every second of the event ? they are gamers like u me who ever, they come here to game
sure they each have set tasks , zardos on the networks mini on the power, me helpin mini even tho im not admin, sure u might have problems with one guy saying what ever he said at you, ( i dont know exactly what he said ) but basicly you are wording it as to say your an admin you shouldnt be playing any games? like wtf you go to any lan admins will be playing games, im sure you would to if u ran one, so just a little respect from both sides here, if hes busy wait a min or 2 theres no big rush.

lol you talk about customer service, do u want to run the lan and go thru all the hassels and head aches they do, yea they provide a service and a dam good one, sure they are not all trained to be the best customer service people they can be BUT WAIT NEWS FLASH they are GAMERS trying to bring people together to play against each other in friendly compitition, to have a laugh , joke around and talk, and offering you benifts of prizes etc,

maybe the tables are a bit packed i cant comment on that i dont do the layouts, only the power which went great with out any major hitches , except for the fool who decided to bring a kettel thats 2000w on a evenly loaded distrobution box which was calculated to give people ample POWER for their COMPUTERS!!!! lol

you complain about people blocking the isle standing chatting to their friends? i dunno about about you but most people i see there use their mouth, and say soemthing like hi guys / girls how are you going can you please move out of the way we are constainyl trying to get thru here? or if that fails then ask the admin ?

so maybe you should calm down and stop having a tearie cause one of the admins said some bad words to you.

i drive 45 min their too woop te do , extremem lan to me is even further away, and i think as well as many other that extreme lan has no where near a good atmosphere as respawn does.

i dont care if u get a grudge on me now after this , but u seem to like to have a flame about little hick ups so thought i might have one back at you , for trying to make something good ... seem bad...

unfortunatly with comps, sometimes things need to get delayed, matches going to long, some people without a team member, i dont think that any of the lans iv been to has had comps run on time all the time.

the guy running the COD4 comps tried his best to make it fair for all team in the interest of fair play. if their is anything that you think could have been done better or any suggestions for the comps please PM R4N and let him know.

in regards to the trackmania comp, that wasnt even run by any of the respawn team.

Yeah i know, and those people did a wonderful job of said tasks. It seems some of the people in the admin area were just 'on the bandwagon for the ride' and used their privilege to power trip.

I was not in a rush, here's a text reenactment of the situation:
*TMM walks up to admin table
*admins peer up at TMM
TMM: hey guys, do you know where Deadman is?
Mini: he's seated over there *points*
TMM: oh ok
guy_next_to_mini: piss off can't you see he's playing a game! find deadman yourself etc
TMM: *rolleyes*

If they were busy then i have no problem with being told to come back in 2, 5, 10mins or an hour, but this was not the case. This guy just told me to get stuffed and even more amazingly, he went out of his way to do it after i had already got the answer to my question.

I have never ever heard such a rude comment from any admin of any other lan i've been to. At other lans, when an admin has been too busy or unable to answer a question they have always referred me to someone else that isn't.

QUOTE (SLoV @ Jan 18 2009, 10:34 PM) *

Yes, every time i needed to get through i'd say "excuse me" to which most of the time they'd respond by grunting (or not at all) and i'd have to push my way past them. It wasn't where there were people were sitting either, it was in the aisles running perpendicular at the end of the rows of tables. If they wanted to have a chat there is plenty of spaces around the hall out of the way of high traffic aisles where people can socialize. Or outside

But i didn't even provoke the guy, you'd be pissed too. If i'm not worth 5 seconds of their time then they aren't worth my $25 and 30 hours.

If by atmosphere you mean playing silly videos on the projector, then yes i agree.

Well that could come down to my inexperience with comps at LAN's. It was the first time i have entered one. This is just how i felt coming out of it. Maybe i was expecting too much from people and have been let down by that.

thats ok mate,

we try to encourage the players to leave feedback so we can run a better event,

please keep it in a civil manner.

not much we could do in regards to room, respawn has been like that since i started attending, we increased the seating capacity for the community since we had almost 500 rego's

In light of the MASSIVE rego's for V10, the lan was run very well. the rows were tight, but thats what you have to do to fit 400 players in, i guess. Was worried about heat all week... but it ended up being very reasonable, i was quite comfortable in the hall.

Anyone have numbers for total players through the door?

extreem gets pritty packed in , infact form memory big day it was tight on the space but u cant expect much when so many people want to come
you have ot try to fit them in

Yawn... TMM... its one thing to give "negative feedback" here, but to spam on other forums about how crap it was, i think is uncalled for. You had a bad experience with one guy? was he an admin? Did you get his name? Was probably a regular player having a chat to miniwalks... oh noes, but the admins arent allowed to socialize! No no.. they spent all day friday setting up for the lan so that dicks like you can play your games and what not, and not have an ounce of respect for the ammount of effort that goes into setting an event of this size up - therefore, they arent allowed to rest, socialize or even play a game at their own fucking event....

Oh and also, in regards to the people socializing in walk ways. Its called a mouth. Use it. Not hard to ask for them to move so you can get by.

Seriously GTFO.

Again, well done respawn crew. Still #1.

As my first time at Respawn (and my first time at a LAN >50 people), my overall opinion is something along the lines of

EPIC.

I really enjoyed myself. It was well worth the mini-road trip with the couple of other guys from up here. All of the guys that I was with had a fantastic time, and will be back next LAN.

I had no problems with the layout or technical side of things. I found the space between tables adequate, power/network was great. The close-together-ness helped me meet a few new people. Seeing people have problems, seeing others next to me game, etc.

Gaming was quite good. I played plenty of games, had heaps of fun (even when I was failing miserably). I do agree the comps weren't on time. But having been in the organisers seat a few times (on a much smaller scale, mind you), I can completely relate and really don't think it's such a bad thing. There will always be problems/no-shows/etc no matter what you try to do.

The EMS needs a few tweaks (in my opinion). More information on said EMS would be desirable. But it still served it's purpose quite well.

Food was great. Not something I'm used to at a LAN. 'twas really good having hot food provided for you. Especially the chicken this morning.

All the people I talked to at the LAN were friendly and interesting. The admins I found to all be friendly and also seemed to know their shit well.

My biggest complaint, however, was the funny pictures. They were great the first one or two times. Then they got ... repetitive? tongue.gif Wait, no, I lie. My biggest complaint was my food choice for the weekend. but that's completely my fault, and in no way shape or form a reflection on the LAN. happy.gif

I have a number of other small things to comment on/suggestions to make/praise to give. Might write them up and send them to the/an admin later on. =)

Hopefully this topic wont turn into a flame war and people ragging on each other.

Feedback to the admins is always important so they can try and improve upon the next event, it has to be constructive though. I've been lanning for a long time now, Shafted 14 being my first event there but CPL Pacific LAN being one of my first large lans. The so called good ole days biggrin.gif

In all my time lanning the last 1.5 years of going to Respawn has been awesome, not saying it was better than Shafted but the quality and infrastructure provided are very good. I remember 500 people having CRT's in that hall and we were on 100 m/bit switches..

Power and network this lan were top notch with only one brownout from the kettle..

Comps while not running on time in some cases were good, much fun to be had. I got to participate in the all non-major drawcard ones, ie. anything that isn't DOTA or CS:S. Sometimes you just have to take things with a grain of salt.. the organisers of the "offical" comps with prizes or such do there best to make things work and it doesn't always go off without a hitch.

DC: This is not the admins responsibility, leeching stuff is up to the players.. we are here to game mainly. If you want to make a hub then go and do it and then get people to join it. But the program used is simple and easy for most people that's why we use it, cause at an event like that hashing fails. I remember the hub put up at the last extremelan.. not knowing till the event whether .306 or .674+ will be used.. i wanted to share all my HD movies/TV series that i have.. over 2 TB worth of stuff..i didn't even bother to hash stuff at the event cause log on..no one is sharing stuff except prehashed people who usually have slots full. I go to leech the stuff i want..and pulling from multiple clients was very FAIL half the stuff i got there was incomplete due to people leaving the hub then not returning.

Overall the LAN was run very well IMO knowing the effort the admin team go to putting on an event this size.

Thanks everyone who helped make it work well. I had a good time again, see you at the next event.

bob thanks for the comments.

ill talk to zardoz and see if next lan we can have a form or something for players on who to talk to for what and where they are sitting.

as always i hate seeing bad feeback in regards to respawn seeing as the huge effort that the guys put in for the LAN for the community.

over the whole weekend we will normally only get around 7 hours sleep (thats friday setup through to sunday packup)

a big thanks to Kat, Spite and Vortex_V for the BBQ work

Thanks to Miniwalks and SloV and all the people that helped them setup power which was pretty much uneventful the whole lan, (except for some nubs kettle)

we had alot let issues with network this lan than previous imho,

Plenty of comps ran and alot of people seemed to have fun doing so, FLATOUt2 seems to be getting moar players than ever

we will try and accomadate the needs of all players at the event but with 350+ ppl that can be fairly hard as you can imagin smile.gif

thanks to everyone for there patience in how the comps ran, we had a few minor set backs at some points but everything seemed to run very well

Well, I had an fantastic time. Congrats on a sweet event.

The awesome:
- Power
- Network
- Hub chat

The not so awesome:
- Old DC clients
- Trackmania comp. Phobos, your map is seriously awesome. However, it wasn't what I was expecting. And it was hard sad.gif

Also, it would nice for more large games. If the admins could just jump on the mic and say "Join <insert random game>" more throughout the LAN that would be sweet. I always enjoy these games biggrin.gif (HL2DM was awesome).

I actually have to agree with 90% of the comments on here. I completely enjoyed the lan! I got to put names to faces and the event itself was really well run. I was fully impressed! Even though I didn't stay the whole time (Syphon and I piked at about 1am) I'm definately looking forward to the next one..

Only One thing... Next Lan.. I'm defiantely bringing my xbox and PC... and the two games I WILL be playing will be guitar hero and WoW! lol WOO!!

I had a great time, catching up with a few people I hadn't met in RL before.

The final round of CSS was pretty intense, would have been nice to see a delayed sourceTV on the projector.

My only complaint would be dc++ and the the latest version being completely useless.

Earlier versions are equally as useless. Ther will always be two sides to this argument. Those that hash, and those that dont. I personally will never run 306, as running over 10 TB on a non hashing client is suicide - high cpu usage, client lags, and other issues.

I think for V11, an official version should be named. I've had nothing but issues with 0.7xx, so im sticking to 0.674 as its worked for me for several years without issue. 306, 401 etc should be banned.

I think for V11, an official version should be named. I've had nothing but issues with 0.7xx, so im sticking to 0.674 as its worked for me for several years without issue. 306, 401 etc should be banned.

agreed me and wookie use .674 no problems at all
