This is my box with a P4 Presscott 3GHZ 1mb cache CPU on an ASUS P4PS800 board with 2GB of ram. It also has about 480GB of hdd space.

2GB Hynix 3-3-3-8 2T
WD 200GB IDE
WD 200GB SATA
Hitachi 80GB IDE
Samsung 16X DVD-ROM
Lite-On 16X Dual layer DVD-R/W
ASUS Nvidia 6600GT 128MB AGP
Onboard 10/100 LAN
PCI - Extended Intel Server Gigabit card
VIA Raid 0,1, 0+1, JBOD card

These photo's arn't current as this case now has an AMD 3700+ San Diego on a DFI NF3 Ultra-D board with 2GB of ram and 830GB of hdd space.

The case has a few different things set up in it now, but the camera I used to take these shots was a friends and I no longer have access to it so I cant update the photo's yet. So I'm not going to bore you with the changes I've made.

No actually TMM there are holes underneath those fans so they blow right onto the back of the motherboard cooling down the mobo and the CPU as well as various other parts.

WOOT!!

just thought id show off my newly aquired beast (yes, it is mine, used at home)

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/powercables2.jpg an overview of the mobo and case
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/cards.jpg a close inspection of the motherboard
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/powercables1.jpg the lovely tangle of power cables. just about every kind and quite long indeed.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/i4mem/voltages.jpg voltage of the system at idle
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/psucomparison.jpg it may not be obvious but the psu is actualy a little bit longer than the psu cage in teh CM Stacker STC-T01 (aka original) and thus makes it way too long to fit up the top.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/PSUrear.jpg all business back here
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y143/Daemo/server/running.jpg WHIIRRR!! its loud and im proud! biggrin.gif

for those that are a mite observant, yes, there is indeed 4 gigabit ports (and one 100mbit)

haha.. dude.. the only time you will see it is right before you put it in and right after you rip it out to put some better ram in instead.

hell, some noob couldnt even see the top 2 ram sticks in my server from the pictures above..

Meh smile.gif I'm ordering it all in 2 weeks, so i'll have another look at Ram i spose.

Posted by: TMM Jul 13 2006, 01:45 PM

I've ripped the heatspreaders off every set of ram that i have (except my current set because i can't get the buggers off) as they just insulate the heat.

They should have named them heat-trappers instead tongue.gif.

It's an Everglide Titan biggrin.gif Best fabric mousepad evar! Has just the right amount of smoothness/friction. A little pricey ($35 I think) but it's totally worth it. I think you need a bigger desk for it though tongue.gif

^I've been on this rig, he uses inbuilt speakers which of course sound like absolute anus. Also Realtek 7.1 isn't a component XD

Edit: My specs are an Athlon two thousand and something that's been underclocked 'cos of a lack of thermal paste that I got from a friend, FX 5500 I also got from a friend, 512mb RAM, DVD-R I found in the dump, 15" LCD I've had for years, 4.1 speakers bought off next door neighbour which only takes a 2-channel input for some reason. With 200gb and... 60gb I think it was hard drives. In a vanilla case. Needless to say I need an upgrade.

Damn, the dual Voodoo2's,and SCSI setup beats my old P200 (with MMX!) configuration. Up until a week ago that was my main machine since the AthlonXP 1800+ stopped booting a few months earlier biggrin.gif

Over the last few months I researched many upgrade paths and settled on this midrange setup:

As expected, it met my design criteria of at least a 50% improvement over the last machine. Planned upgrade to the VGA is a 7600GT, for a total system cost of $380. A Counter Strike Source VGA stress test showed about 59 FPS at 1024x768, max quality, no anti-aliasing. Approximately 30 FPS better than the last machine, and I have yet to update the VGA, so I'm very happy with this setup smile.gif I'll be running the PCMark benchmark to put a number on that improvement.

Operating systems: OS/2, Windows 98SE and Windows 2000, though Windows 98SE craps out on startup due to "Insufficient Memory". I am investigating a registry edit which should allow 98 to boot. There are just some old games that run better on 98SE, such as Recoil biggrin.gif

Oh, and I'll be bringing the P200 as well. With a new 48bit LBA IDE card, it should make an excellent file server. smile.gif

Posted by: LolSauce Oct 21 2007, 06:56 PM

I too have upgraded, with the G92's around the corner and PCIE and DDR3 aswell... I thought I'd go midrange too.

the 60g is my mp3 drive and the 80g is for my o/s both are 7200rpm im a tight ass so when they die ill replace them. i have a quantum fireball in 1 of other systems still going strong.

Planing on Fan moding my X1950pro with a Tt DuOrb, The Tt lanbox is a hotbox , would be ok for systems that ant overclocked. As is iv had to drop the VGA clock due to the heat . looking to build a new system to play with 45nm would be nice , have yet to find a release date.

it seems that "pimping" cases seems to be a thing of the past now, its more about how much your case has inside it biggrin.gif

my couple of teebs does me well enough for now, and until i can be bothered, i dont think im gonna be changing my setup much

stupid me wanting to buy a house n new car bla bla there goes my money for a while tongue.gif

judging from respawn 6 there are still alot of people casemodding, less so than previous respawns and lans i used to attend.

Posted by: neon Mar 13 2008, 12:51 PM

i've grown out of case modding. In 2004 i had a Thermalcake lanfire which i blinged to billio....

since then i bought a CM Stacker and bought a window for it and put UV neons in it with cable sleeving, but now i only mod for cooling. i modded 2 x 120mm fans in the side, and a 120mm fan in the top - i have black cable sleeving that came with the psu, and no bling to speak of.

Posted by: dead_man Mar 17 2008, 09:29 PM

couple of changes to my server since last lan

now running

Dual Xeon 5150 Dual Cores
6Gb ram
intel S5000VSA
4 raid cards

1x 80Gb for OS
2x 200gb SATA
1x 400Gb SATA
1x 500Gb SATA
1x 1Tb SATA
10x 320GB SATA

running to PSU atm. intend to switch to one PSU unit eventually and stick some more drives down the bottom

Posted by: neon Mar 26 2008, 02:12 PM

Just added 2 1TB drives, so should hit about 7.5TB formatted. havent got them all in at the moment, rehauling my hdd setup - will be ready for lan though.

why that board? Why not something like an EX38-DQ6? Do you need 64-bit pci lanes for a raid controller or something? I think i have heard that the pci lanes on that board have problems. Someone on ocau had issues with his raid array not being as fast as it should.

Posted by: neon Dec 17 2008, 09:45 PM

meh - i7 is overrated. Im still chugging along happily with my Q6600/4GB/8800GT. I see no reason to upgrade my system. i7 chips are apparently good value... but with board and DDR3, it ends up being close to $1000 just for the basics for board, chip, and ram.

700w Seasonic power supply. Power supplys are over rated, so long as you get a good one, you dont need a 10,000KW power supply for most things. Its the generic crap that you need to be concerned about. Have 8 SATA from the psu, and 5x molex splitters for another 10 SATA

Try http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/244665-29-owners-q6600-specs

Has a large supply of voltages for 3.2+ on air cooling

I've got a coolermaster geminii CPU cooler which does the job really well so I can afford to overclock and make the temps go up just a bit. I'll have a read on that, thanks.

i agree with the g19 being pricey but they kidna fucked up the g15 v2 making the screen small and making it orange honestly blue is easier to see a night and the small screen is worsier i rather a bigger one so the writing isn't so dam tiny

Posted by: Andrewzor Feb 23 2010, 07:56 PM

I really don't think they 'fucked' it up, they made it a lot smaller which I like, the other had two many G buttons for my needs.

When I first got orange I was skeptical but once your used to it its fine. The screen size difference I don't notice, the only thing I miss is that the screen was movable sad.gif

Listen here Giarus. You can't say the g15 V2 sucks if you have never had one of your own to use. I love the g15 V2. But I have to agree about the screen in that you can't move it. Besides that it's pretty freakin awsome.

Old photo. I now have a new inverter for that EL wire, and some new video card love. All in my ridiculous, impractical and oversized case which I both love and hate. Specs are a bit old, new i7 system on the way soon (after I deal with civic compliance).

CPU: Intel Core2 Q9400 o/c to 3.29 GHz
Cooler: ZeroTHERM Core92
RAM: 4GB Kingston 667MHz DDR2 5-5-15-36 (4x1GB)
GPU: nVidia GTX275 (with 9800GT for PhysX)
HDD: 3x 500GB, 2x 1.0TB
Case: Silverstone Raven RV01
PSU: XFX 850w Black Edition
K/B: G11
Mouse: CM Storm Sentinel
Monitor: BenQ G2420HD, Chimei CMV221D
M/B: ASUS P5Q Pro
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Sound Card: SoundBlaster X-Fi Live 5.1
Speakers: Logitech x530 5.1 Surround Sound
Headset: ROCCAT Kave 5.1 Surround Headset
Mousepad: SteelSeries QcK Mass
Other: 1x 10cm UV CCFL, 1x 30cm UV CCFL, some lengths of EL wire, UV reactive green IDE cable, UV reactive Blue SATA cables,

and a plethora of peripherals and accessories which are mostly ludicrous and look pretty with bloated with features I will never use.

Over the last few months I researched many upgrade paths and settled on this midrange setup:
  • Asus M2N-X motherboard

  • 2GB kit of Corsair Value ram, 667MHz operating frequency.
  • Donated nVidia 7300LE, 512mb DDR2.

I'm currently building a set up from scratch.

I have an i7 930, 4gb of ripjaw ram, 750w psu, and a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Motherboard.

Any suggestions on what I should finish up with?
i'm thinking a 5870, and 2tb of hdd.

But the X58 boards use 6gb tri-channel RAM... why wouldn't you do that instead?

HAHAHAHA, sorry dude, had to say it

i have tried and tested 4 different sets of ripjaw ram
i have to say, its fast... VERY fast, but after several hours of use, all.. and i mean ALL of them started to get some serious read/write errors and were thus unusable

there is a reason its so cheap

hope you have better luck with yours

Well, my gaming rig of 3 years malfunctioned on Tuesday of this week. The end result is no POST or beep codes. Evidence suggests that it is the CPU since it had locked up on the screensaver; at the very least the motherboard was working as the video card was still working. Honestly, that is speculation, though.

...So, I am back to my original computer biggrin.gif

Specs:
Gigabyte GA586TX motherboard
Intel Pentium Pro 200 with MMX
256mb SDRAM
"Plus Power" 200 watt PSU
40GB IDE Seagate something (run via PCI-IDE adapter card for 48bit LBA support)
S3 Trio64 2mb 2d accelerated VGA

Dualboot OS/2 and Windows 98 SE.

Pic (my apologies for the very bad quality)

New machine in the future will based around intel Q6600/8400.

Cheers

Posted by: That Commander Aug 24 2010, 08:47 PM

Ok. I have done some initial scoping for the specs of a new machine:

CPU: Intel i5 760 (2.8GHz, 4 core)
MB: Asus P7P55-LX
RAM: 4GB Kit 1600 Kingston
VGA: ATI 5750
PSU: Thermaltake Evo Blue thing 550W
Total cost: $768 from MSY.

If this screams midrange - that's because it is. However, it is probably safe to say it is more than twice as powerful as my last machine. According to PassMark* website, at least.

(*I find it amusing that the nVidia 7300 LE is about as powerful as the nVidia GeForce4 440 MX. dry.gif )

Cheers

My only suggestions is to change powersupplies. Look out for something which is 80 Plus certified, like a Seasonic or a Corsair.

I've settled on an Antec TP-550 with Bronze level 80 Plus certification (~81% efficiency at full, 50% and idle loads). For those who are interested, the TermalTake Evo Blue was rated at max 75%. The Antec is cheaper and more efficient.

Thanks for bring that to my attention.

Parts cost: $640 or so

Reason: My PC was drinking alot of juice with its 4890 and Q6600 (like at least 180w idle, shitloads more load). I built this PC with components that would idle at very low wattages (16-18w CPU, 26-30w GPU), yet still be powerful enough for all the games i play. So far, it has done very well on both counts. I also wanted a tiny light PC for lans smile.gif

I need to get around to squeezing my machine into an actual 486 case one of these days.

Cheers

Except that it has an antec power supply.

Look mat my beast!

How the hell did I miss this?

What hardware is it running?

I love old technology biggrin.gif

I have a not so ancient 386 Toshiba 5200/100 "Portable Computer":

(image from website: http://www.sinasohn.com/cgi-bin/clascomp/bldhtm.pl?computer=t52001)

One of these days I'll put a MicroATX board in it. Heck, it could probably fit a real motherboard in it.

Not pictured here is the backplate I bought for my 760 the other day.

This is my LAN PC, I just upgraded the processor from an i7 920 to an i7 3770k. This meant I had to upgrade the motherboard too. If you remember me from v28 I was running a gigantic Noctua NH-D14 cooler, I replaced that with a $350 custom loop.

I suppose you're after the specs too, here they are:

Intel i7 3770k @4.6GHz
Gigabyte Z77x-D3H
EVGA GTX 760 2GB - 1150/5502
Gigabyte GT 610 (Phsyx)
Corsair TX650 PSU
Samsung 840 120GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 1TB x2 (RAID 1)
Cooler Master HAF XB
All my fans are Noctua.
