Respawn LAN Forums _ Gaming _ Comp Times - Important

Posted by: The Shadow Mar 7 2008, 08:06 PM

This is an important poll and I need everyone looking to rock up to the next lan to vote in it.

Option 1 essentially means we run them one after another as it states meaning that you'll still be playing in comps at 4am on a Sunday morning, not really fun its happened before.

Option 2 means that 1-2 comps will run one after another while other comps are going on at the same time which means YOU WILL HAVE TO CHOSE A COMP AND STICK WITH IT, instead of playing both DOTA and CS you will have to choose one or the other or possibly CS and COD4 or TF2 you will have to pick ONE comp to enter because others will be running at the same time, this options is the most likely one to happen by the way because its the best way to do things over all.

Option 3 means that half the comps will start all at the same time and when they are over the other half of the comps will start all at the same time.

Vote for the option that you would like to see happen, and remember you only have a month.

looks like im soundly outvoted already tongue.gif

Option 2 ftw.

But you should try to stack the comps so that things that clash are as different as possible.

Running, for example, Starcraft and WC3 at the same time, and then later CS and DOD at the same time, would be fail. But CS/Starcraft together, and then DOD/WC3 together not so much.

As long as you print up a nice schedule so its easy to see what comps will overlap - this could easily be done in outlook and printed out one day to an a4 or whatever.

Theres a starcraft comp? =o

yeah two is probably the best option, nobody wants to be contstantly playing comps, i think it might be better if people go with the game they are best at, thus giving a better match.

The options names and the text is very misleading... *ponders with TPA*

Posted by: SiMONiZZLE Jan 9 2009, 12:39 PM

Same as you's have been doing in the previous lans i reckon.

Posted by: Anarchy RD Jan 9 2009, 01:55 PM

option 2 is the way to go wink.gif

Posted by: Rain Jan 15 2009, 07:30 PM

last time, the final dota game was at 6am... by that time no one can really be fcuked with it.. i vote option two. get it all over n done with so we can play more dc++

Posted by: fletchdawg Aug 18 2009, 12:07 AM

cod4 and css are the 2 bigest games they should be ran separately, so that more teams can play in both

Posted by: NeoNachos Aug 18 2009, 01:09 AM

maybe you should run different genre of games at the same time, but each seperate game one after another.

so CSS will go before CoD4 and later TF2... but at the same time have WC3 follow on to starcraft and then dota or something like that.

ideally you should be aiming to have more teams competing in both cod4 and CSS as fletchdawg said.

i Agree it would be good if the biggest games where played not all at the same time.... its really annoying i always have games that i wanted to play in but could not due to clashes... and the fun comps should be held in between matches if possible tongue.gif i know thats hard but maybe the bigger ones like Flatout 2, HL2DM and UT2004 after or in between the main comps smile.gif

Posted by: R4N Aug 18 2009, 09:18 PM

While i understand, and am inclined to agree with this idea, It is impossible to implement.

For example if i ran CS:S followed by COD followed by TF2, then TF2 would end up running at 5am.

That or i would have to run far more basic competitions.

I attempt to make the comps run as seamless as possible, but if there are any specific annoyances in the timetable, feel free to let me know.

Can we just have CSS and TF2 running at different times? >_>

Posted by: dead_man Sep 14 2009, 10:19 PM

you will be happy to know there is around a 4 hour break between when im hoping CS:S will be finished and TF2 is scheduled to start

Posted by: GIARUS Sep 26 2009, 01:46 PM

I find it would be easier to have one after the other that way ppl can join as many comps as they want.

Did you even read the last few posts? How would that be easier?

Clearly he has not read any of it.

I did read im saying wat i think.

Coming from a CSS comp perspective, I feel left out of other comps such as DOTA due to the fact it's run over other comps, now I love CSS but it takes other guilty pleasures away from me, such as Hawx comp and red alert.....

Posted by: SirSquidness Jan 11 2010, 11:40 AM

You need to make a decisision between CSS and the other competitions.
The CSS competition takes way too long for it to not clash with other competitions.

If we were to make it not clash (and this goes for every competition and event we run) the people who don't play the respective competiton wont have any organised events to play in over the many hours some competitions run for.

Posted by: Elliot Jan 13 2010, 08:30 PM

All above arguments are invalid.

Its stupid to run competitions at the same time when we obviously have ample time to spread them out. If people are worried that theyll be to tired once their comp comes around - MAN UP. Its a LAN ffs, not some sleepover club.

Comps running parallel with eachother is the one thing that pissed me off last lan.
tl;dr: Admins! do us a favour and run them one after the other!

Posted by: Jeffy Jan 13 2010, 10:15 PM

Elliott: They really are quite valid. Many lan's I have personally attended including Shafted, DLC, and now Respawn. The CS:S competition starts like 12pm and sometimes hasn't finished until close to midnight.

Running them as you have requested would mean SirSquid and his team would need to make some competitions like 2am in the morning. Whilst I think its a feasable option for some, for others it may not entirely be the best option.

Hi.

Thank you for your input. I see large red text, so now you've both insulted my reading skills (I can read your opinion without large red text) and mildly annoyed me.

Please, when being so condescending to us, consider that by the time you guys rock up on Saturday morning, the team has put in anywhere between 8 to 18 hours of work. We've had a few hours sleep. This is how we roll. We do man up. We man up really hard, so we can bring you the best damn event we can.

Let me sumarise up our rough estimates of comp running times.

(This list taken from the v12 competition schedule, I don't have v15s yet and can't find any other LANs)

That's almost 25 hours of comeptitions.

If we had an overwhelming majority in support of it, we would consider it.

But we don't. We have about a 50/50 split.

However, were said overwhelming majority to support running one competition at a time, we could roster our team around the "tired as hell and need to be awake for packup" issue, and do it. But we don't. There is no need to at this time.

Those 50% of people who say "No, I don't want to stay up until 5AM to wait for the one comp I really want to play" are people who also have a perfectly valid argument.

Consider that they may have sleeping patterns to semi keep, things they need to do Sunday, health issues preventing them from staying up all night, what not. There are plenty of valid reasons to not stay up all night at a LAN.

From what I've talked to the relevant people about, I do not believe anything will be changing significantly in the near future.
We try to minimise conflicts with popular events where possible. We can't make everyone happy. Ever. It is not possible.

So, look at what competitions are running when, man up, and make a decision which one you wish to play in.

And next time, less large red text, less unbased claims (such as all arguments are invalid) and more considering of the entire picture, not just your own wishes.

Thank you.

I think that, if its a 2 day LAN the events should run late even if this means finishing at say 2am+
I think that having events one after the other is best so that people can even watch some of the other games being played.
Because i myself hate not being able to watch the CSS finals and what not. Its always enjoyable watching other teams go at it.

Posted by: SirSquidness Jan 13 2010, 10:47 PM

Competitions do finish at 2AM.

One or two LANs ago, the DotA competition finished at 5AM. It started early evening.

TF2 started at 11PM last time, and took a few hours to run.

It's not as if we want to be tucked in by midnight - but demanding that anyone wanting to play in certain comps stay up all through the night is an unfair demand (see my last post for reasoning).

If you would like copies of the CSS finals, come and see me at the admin desk - we record SourceTV of all the matches (except when it screws up). Same goes for TF2.

Posted by: Tank Jan 13 2010, 11:18 PM

Also please remember that the admins and gophers start work at noon on the friday, and basically work through untill 5 or 6pm on the sunday. so give us a little headway ;p

Posted by: dead_man Jan 14 2010, 12:12 PM

ok ill settle this now

due to elliot wanting to run everything one after another ill do that no problem

here are the following changes

10AM to 5PM for War3
5PM to 4AM for CSS
4AM to 12PM sunday
12PM till packup for TF2

all other comps are now cancelled since its so much better to run them one after another :/

Posted by: R4N Jan 14 2010, 12:56 PM

Please note our comp admin is being sarcastic tongue.gif

also im closing this thread as i think the point is well and truly across
