z0mg! First post! lolololol! HAI!

*ahem*

I'm just curious, how many people does Respawn get travelling from more than, say, half an hour away? Do you get many from regional cities (eg, Bendigo!) Perhaps any bus loads, or people using public transport to carry their PCs there?

If you were to travel two hours to a LAN, any advice? I have car. Will drive if I have someone to share petrol money with tongue.gif

I myself live in Bendigo. I'm an admin for a 40+ person LAN up here [invite only, sorry folks wink.gif ]. I'm wanting to head down to Melbourne with a few mates for a nice big LAN, so far Respawn looks like the best option. Your answers wont have a bearing on my choices I'm just curious. wink.gif

I live 45 mins away, not too much of an issue. We had a couple of guys from fragfest in sydney at the respawn just passed, that was pretty cool. (Dunno if they drove or flew down but)

See, the beauty of driving with a few mates to a LAN over that distance is the whole road trip thing that goes with it. 1.5 to 2 hours (Not entirely sure how long it is to get to Respawn from my place. I believe somewhere around there) isn't really a road trip, more an afternoon outing.

But I've known quite a few people who've done the same thing. And when I actually have a decent income and can afford to drive/fly to other major cities for awesome LANs, I will happy.gif

In fact, I was at a tiny LAN in the middle of no where at the start of the year where one of the guys flew from Sydney to come. Disassembled his PC (that he hadn't touched in yonks, he's a mac man these days), put all the bits in static bags in his suit case, flew down, and set it up on a cardboard box for the duration of the LAN. So much win. So much potential to spill coke/energy drinks...

I used to live 2 hours drive east of Melbourne in the valley, and I still made my way to city lans.
It's easy if you plan your stops out to give you a chance to stretch your legs and get food.

It is good to get a few people together though with a big enough vehicle to support the job.

Mad props to that Sydney dude who packed and flew with his PC in suitcases.

When I was involved with the AGDC event in 2003, we had a PC courier ship our game server and personal PCs up there. I also believe that one of our admins once flew with a PC placed in a suitcase but it ended up in bad shape after the trip home.

Hi all

Hmm....the Sydney guys would have to take the cake.

I Regularly drive from Mildura, about a 7 hour trip. Generally do it straight, sometimes take a break in Bendigo.

Pulling all nighters at the LAN and then driving back home is a pain, but its gotta be done biggrin.gif

Cheers

Heya,

As oohms pointed out, we've had interstaters before. We've definitely had some people come from regional Victoria so please do come! We're looking at expanding our capacity a little as well so this shall be, without a doubt, the biggest Respawn LAN event we've ever run.

Miss out on it at your own risk smile.gif

Over 350. We can do it, it'll just be a bit tight.

Back in the Shafted LAN days, that venue held over 450 players but the admin area was on the balcony, there was no stage and PCs used a lot less power back then.

put the admin area on the stage to make more room? i guess at the end of the day, you wouldnt really make up a whole lot of space doing that. 350 is huge anyway, any extra players can be shoved in the annex like last time, but i think the rego's should stay at 350. Considering there are 382 registered, you should get about what, 330-340 confirmed?

i doubt the stage could even hold the admins... tongue.gif
330-350 confirmed i would expect
however by the look of respawns past... we may hit the cap and then some this event

Regos do hit the cap at 350. it may seemt hat we have 420 "registered" but thats just 350 + 70 on a waiting list. this all changes and gets muddled when confirmations happen.

As check-in bitch; CONFIRM. for your own sake! don't give in to a haphazard chance that 70 people will forget about the event. better to be safe than sorry!

Also when we talk player limits, size is only one of the variables. There are other issues like Power and safety and such things smile.gif

I'm going to play my 2600km each way trip to melbourne for 2 lans 4ish years ago(hit shafted and another one then drove back 2 days later)
(don't live in Alice Springs(also don't do Alice to Melbourne in 2 days))

We (the crazy Alice Springs people) also did 3 group trips up to the DGA anzac day lan in Darwin though that was only 1500kms each way

So much happier now i only have to travel from Footscray

... Epic.

That's all I need to say.

Power... Bring more people. I'll bring my UPS. Problem solved (for me)!
Hell, I'll be generous. I'll bring an extension lead and run my PC from the toilets!

And safety... Hell, it's a LAN. There's enough biohazards in there to kill a small african nation. 'sif we need to worry about safety tongue.gif

(On a more serious note, I do completely realise why there's limits =) )
