when i call tpg they treat me like i know nothing about networking
i have a certs 3 in networking and currently under goin a genral diploma in Information tech
and they say somthing is wrong with my modem

When you're taking a call from some customer, you don't care if "they have certificates" or they've "been in the industry for 20 years". All you care about is making sure you don't ignore the troubleshooting steps because they "know what they're doing" but in reality, all they know is that blue cable is called a "network cable".

Assuming the customer knows nothing is better for the customer than letting them convince you that the customer knows everything, even if you do.

...To a point.

If I claim black and blue that a modem is cactus (no lights, ping, no web UI)
and the guy keeps following a script to solve my problem and asks me for the fifth time if i have rebooted it, I get pretty pissed off.

In fact it is good practice to work with your client if he/she has decent technical knowledge, because it usually makes them less angry, and just might get the problem solved quickly.

I get pissed off with that 2 every 5 mins they ask did u restart your computer did u take out your router then plug it in
god it gets annoying

Let me chime in here and try not to thread clog, bump or anything like that.

I churned to TPG on 16/03/2010...

It was fine until 31/03/2010 when faults started developing, and here's what I've gotten...
- Drop outs
- Sync speed issues
- General speed issues

3pm 4.5mbit from their own download test mirror
11pm 6.6mbit from their own mirror
3am 15.6mbit from their own mirror.

I've changed the modem, I've changed the wiring, I've rewired my house (through a certified technician of course). Short of having deadman deadroll the exchange into submission. I'm out of troubleshooting steps. Its not my network because I take the ethernet cable OUT of the ADSL2+ modem and place it into my Optusnet cable modem, I get a consistent clean speed of 15.5mbit (Even from Christchurch NZ).

They are sending a field technician to test my lines. Because I'm getting slow speeds?

Go figure...

TPG are a pain in the ass. I saved $50 and spent it in phone calls to those useless yobbos!
