Love the hoodie... you didn't have diet coke though We did have a slab, but it was in the back room until i brought it out. (also, the drinks NOT in the fridge were as cold as the drinks IN the fridge O_o) (oh and i thought we had 2 slabs, but one was coke zer and pepsi INSIDE a diet coke box. wth! lol) and yea, hoodies are THE best decision ever. QUOTE (Maelstrom @ Jul 7 2010, 11:27 AM) <...> How about... IRC? It has channels and everything! People could pay attention to it for announcements and notifications of who was playing what, and could even make separate rooms for their friends or people they're playing with.
There is a small learning curve there, and people have to install the software. But I believe it was mentioned a while back that a browser-based client might be able to be implemented on the intranet site. I had not thought of IRC since I have about zero experience with it. Also, the idea was not really to provide chat facilities, but simple notifications like the Respawn Notifier. However IRC could serve the purpose as long as a there is free client which will provide some sort of popup or sound notification (ie MSN/Windows Live). Otherwise, you will have to poll the channels for updates, which this idea is trying to avoid. Cheers

I've been coming to these lans ever since Respawn Pirates. Every time it gets better, (with exception that with > people means no more dedicated console gaming like we had in the beginning with networked xboxes and guitar hero. Should definetely bring it back). I would like to bring to everyones attention the fact that there are viruses on some people’s pcs at the lan. I always virus scan my pc with up to date antivirus to ensure it is clean and no risk to other users. I contracted a virus during the night (I didn’t even open an application) and I had to cut my lan short and go home which I didn’t want to do. I wasted my money and time all because someone didn’t keep his pc clean. The virus was a self multiplying one called w32.rontokbro@mm. I have spent 4 days trying to clean my pc, I think it is done now but I’m scared to connect to the internet. The admins must do something about this. When e-mail reminders go out to confirm and news items go up about new lans they should include a sentence stressing that people must virus scan their pc with up to date antivirus. And include it somewhere on the website. It’s mainly for the lazy people or new people to respawn lan but it is important. This is not the first time a virus has been at the lan. Remember a while a go someones pc had a virus causing problems with the network. So people need to be reminded!

IRC does serve a purpose. I'm building an IRC server on my test machine at home (however the HDD died so now it's "virtual" until I fix it. Currently it'll do all of that. MIRC is free and does have the ability to alert through flashing and noise, but unless you configure it, it wont. IRC is really just another platform WE CAN/WE WILL support because we run it. I'll get it working and give the configuration to orsm sando to put into the main server we have or we'll do something but I'd like to see it working because I've got it working at home for the LAN

This was my first Lan, loved it. CoD tournie needed to start earlier, same with Quake. Especially Quake. Sunday? Most people left then. The notifications should of been better, cause I was rather confused because of delays and stuff (not that I could play the games, cause my laptop could only leech... just) kinda missed out on the girls comp cause of that. &&& We need more Nerfness. QUOTE (xbox_girl @ Jul 7 2010, 12:49 PM) I also confirm that is was not me (i was in a Choose your own weapon t-shirt, Transformers hoodie and jeans) or Caylem (STFU Jumper)... did anyone ever find out who the chick in the white beanie was?? lol She was the talk of DC++ for like 5 hours... Hahaha, That would be Rach. i Lol'd when all the guys were spectating her in the girls comp. Hey.
First Time going to Respawn. Had Great fun, Made some new friends, which is what i look for in a lan.
Overall it was good, except for the COD comp, When we where apparently Vsing Team Legacy and we ended up waiting over 20 minuets for the scrim, which in end apparently was a muck up in the group matches. I reckon a set rules should be compulsory to read. And that if a team doesn't show up after 10 minutes the Four fit. anyway Was great got heaps of gaming done. Couple of new games and what not.
Cheers fellas.
EDIT - toose log out of my account plox.

First things first
IRC
we actually run an IRC server at the lan that can easily be access through our web based IRC client in the EMS. its simple to use even for the beginners. will make sure its easier to find next event.
VIRUS
whilst we recommend everyone runs A/V software there are many things that can be done to minimise this problem.
1st: turn off windows file sharing! especially if you have write access enabled!.
2nd: since none of the admin/gopher team seem'ed to cop the virus i can only assume that its either come from DC++ or let in via a poorly configured A/V software. and im willing to bet it was DC++.
whilst Respawn LAN no longer supports it i cannot stress enough if you are going to share files at ANY LAN expect to cop a virus! i can only assume that you have downloaded something that was infected and compromised your PC.
PS: get a better AV!

Just something to note,
To the best of my knowledge, the cooling system was never turned on. we intermittently turn the fans on, but this is required due to smell, and also due to OH&S to keep fresh air moving through the venue.
In regards to the streaming,
We had 2 streams going at the event, 1 with the TV 1 with gamestah (atleast it was planned for them to be streamed)
With regard to the high traffic load,
It is an issue that we are looking into, we did have multicast snooping on this event, but this relies on the application sending the traffic actually marking it correctly, but it is known about, and is being looked into.
+1 to what dead_man said, get good AV, turn off ALL windows FS if in doubt.

Even with IRC, that doesn't mean instant contact to admins as they have their admin duties to preform. You could always post a thread on the EMS forums or PM them on that with your message to them

(fyi; it's HARD ) thanks very much everyone No they're not, they're at basically every toy shop you go into... I know for a fact they have them in Toys R Us.

Or you could get a decent scanner that picks things up before they have a chance to infect. I've been using ESET Smart Security (paid for it) for 3 years, never had an issue, not at home, not at LANs.

ive had just the same luck with Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, it detected 2 or 3 things but deleted them before they did anything
My point is, it doesnt help any, you saying that you hvae good results with eset, being 1) paid and 2) one of the best av's out there. because most of the people at respawn that do end up getting virus's are... how would i say... not inclined to pay for an AV

Avast LiveCD?
I'm using Avast and it's doing an excellent job for me, very rarely encounter a virus threat, and in the case that I do, avast kicks in.
