Yo. Are many people here interested in playing racing games at Respawn? I'm considering taking my G25 (just got a G27 Wheel Stand Pro for it - www.wheelstandpro.com.au), in hope there's some people that might want to play some multiplayer GTR Evolution, GTR2, DiRT2... I dunno (please, no GRID).
If there's not much interest (which is what I am assuming), I imagine GTR is out of the question, as it'd just be boring. DiRT2 however, could still be interesting with few players, and is pretty fun with a wheel, yet still playable with a keyboard.
So, any players here with a wheel who'd be down for racing...? And if not, anyone down for some DiRT2 or something at some point?

QUOTE (Ezkaton @ Oct 17 2010, 04:52 AM) Yeah, I'm just not a fan of the game physics, so it's a pain in the ass for me to play it with a wheel, as I always try to apply real-world physics (ie: how a real car would react) to it, and that doesn't go down so well. Guess it just comes from too many years of sim racers. Just one thing, I would think you don't own the majority of those cars and probably have not driven them either. So i don't think you would know how to apply real world physics or anything like that. Sure you may know what game is a racing sim and what is an arcade racer, but i know that you don't know how a car would react to every specific situation. Just remember, just because it's a racing sim doesn't mean it's accurate either.

Anyway, what I was going to say (my previous post was done from my phone), is that I wasn't speaking car-specific, merely generally. It's not hard to understand weight shift on a car (omgzphysics), road angle, etc... and how that is going to affect the handling of a certain situation, coupled, obviously with particular car setup settings... regardless of what car it is.
Hence the dislike for arcade racers such as GRID, or Flatout, and so on... They don't act or respond as they should, and that's my main concern with arcade racers. By default, I tend to try to apply my sim-racing knowledge to the games, and that doesn't work, because they don't drive in a realistic manner in comparison... but it's enough to please at least half the racing game fans out there... and to some that's fine.
To others, such as myself... it's not fine. Which is why I steer clear of them.

Hey Ezkaton, I will be up for a sim race next Sunday (31st October). Just too busy this weekend. Let me know what game and class you want to race in so I can at least have a test drive first.
I will see if I can get some interest going from the other members of this forum as well.
Cheers

Hmm, I don't think I'll be home 'til after roughly 5pm or so. I've just been driving GTR Evo, WTCC (2007) at the moment... so I guess we can race that. Pretty easy for beginners, as all the cars minus the BMW are FWD, which is better for learners. I'll see if I can get anybody I know to join in as well (the people I know are mostly unexperienced and just bought wheels for GT5 ). Anyway I'll see what kind of interest I can gather up and let you know. EDIT: One guy has let his friend borrow his G27, another's PC has stopped working and he's too incompetent/lazy to fix it, and the last is just a total lazy bastard. Could probably set up an open online server though. Last time I did that, it was basically full within 5-10 mins of the prac session..

Okee dokee, been doing some more laps in GTR Evolution
Track: Curitiba 07 GT Sport Class Corvette (the V8 soundtrack is awesome) Best Time: 1:26.550
Still judging braking distance from curves, so some scope for improvement. I finally change the default to 360 on the wheel, I think that has helped corning somewhat. Less tire squeal, at least. Is there a way to monitor tire wear, say in a pitstop?
Cheers

I'm not too sure, I'd have to take a look. I might jump on now and do some laps on the same track/car and see how I go. Tyre temperatures are important, too. I really hope they go more in-depth with the new GTR that's currently in development. iRacing has it down-pat... other sims need to take note of their setup and sharing system, and their safety rating system. EDIT: I did 1:21 on my opening lap and it's an unfamiliar car to me... looks like you need some practice bro. I can't seem to find tyre wear or temperature anywhere though... I've only ever seen it when I come in for a pit stop on a race.

What car setup by the way? I was once again using default file for the car and track provided by SimBin.
Update:
Righto
My time of 1:26 still stands. Might be able to bring it down to 1:24, but 1:21 is basically impossible.
However, that was the GT Sport version. There was a GT Pro version, which I was able to do the lap in 1:23, and that was on my second lap. It cornered faster and braked quicker.
Can you confirm you were racing with the GT Sport version?

Yes, GT Sport, I made sure of it... I used the Simbin setup, too. Might record a lap. (1:21 is also pretty bad, btw... I could see many points where my driving could be improved) I had a look at the online leaderboard and the record is 1:17... So we're both slow.

Oh well. I will reclarify that 1:21 is impossible for me right now. Any faster around corners and tires will start squeeling, not to mention I start losing control. I will try a different track tonight. Same car, I like the Corvette Edit# If you can record that time trial, I'd like to see it.

Did it again, 1:21.8 -- didn't record it though, as I don't have Fraps installed atm. That car is SO fucken shit, though... it feels like it just doesn't want to turn, then you give it a little more revs and it tries to slide on you, and its brakes are HORRIBLE.
